Learning to Waldorf Together: How Connection and Nature Enrich Our Family Journey

There’s something truly special about connecting with others, especially as parents. We’ve recently had the joy of participating in two parent-child classes, attending the Festival of Courage play, and my baby daughter Laura and I running in 5K of Courage. Each experience has allowed us to meet wonderful people who share our values.  It has been an incredible source of inspiration and resourcefulness. Every time there's a song or music, Laura smiles and lights up.

I wholeheartedly believe that a wholesome, natural environment sets everyone up for success. Just walking into The Waldorf School of DuPage, I can feel the difference. The walls are painted with non-toxic paint, the toys are made from wood and other natural materials, and there are no screens in sight. In contrast to many public schools, where phones are often present even if not actively used, the Waldorf approach fosters a calm and focused atmosphere. This environment is conducive to relaxation and learning, allowing both children and adults to thrive. Every time I step into that building, I feel reassured that my child is not only being educated but also becoming attuned to the world around her. I believe the foundational principles of Waldorf education will and do truly make a difference in her development.

During the first seven years of life, it’s not appropriate to focus a child's education heavily on intellectual work. Children learn best through movement, play, and song. This kinesthetic and environmental engagement is how they absorb the world. That’s why we make it a point to spend time outdoors. At home, we often spread out a blanket on the grass and simply “be” outside. Laura loves to play in the grass and discover leaves; it entertains her and offers so much more than screen time ever could. In fact, we don’t even have a TV at home.

It’s essential to feel the quiet, to connect with the trees around us, and to truly experience living on this beautiful earth. This connection to nature and community enriches our family life and nurtures our daughter’s growth in ways that are profound and lasting.

As I navigate this soul journey of parenthood, I cherish the joy of connection, the power of music, and the beauty of nature. These are the experiences that shape our children and help them flourish, reminding us all of the importance of living fully in each moment.

Until next time, WSD!
