As someone born and raised in Warrenville, my journey to Waldorf has been a deeply personal one. I have fond memories of playing in Summer Lakes behind The Waldorf School of DuPage (WSD), and it feels almost surreal to find ourselves on the other side of the woods. It’s incredible how life has a way of bringing us full circle!
When my son Owen began his educational journey, his kindergarten experience was truly magical. He had an incredible teacher who filled the classroom with love and encouragement, creating a safe space for him to thrive. However, first grade felt like a stark contrast. Owen no longer felt heard or supported, and his confidence began to plummet. Each day became a challenge, and I knew we couldn’t continue down that path.
Our first encounter with WSD was at the Elves Market. Walking into the school for the first time brought tears to my eyes; it was simply beautiful. In Owen’s first two weeks at Waldorf, he formed a trusting relationship with Ms. Bevard, who was both firm and comforting. The support we received during this transition was nothing short of miraculous. I couldn’t have asked for a better environment for my son, and it’s been a joy to witness how Waldorf meets children where they are, allowing them to thrive.
Bringing the Waldorf philosophy home has been a natural extension of our values. I’ve always been drawn to nature, and we make it a point to spend ample time outdoors. We read daily, cook together, and engage in science experiments. Owen’s curiosity is boundless; if he has a question, we dive into it together. Recently, we explored oceanic concepts through an experiment with gummy bears, discussing the effects of salt water on sharks. We embrace a wide variety of activities based on his interests.
Reflecting on our journey, I am filled with gratitude for Waldorf and everything I’ve learned. I trust that the universe has aligned perfectly for us, and I am continually impressed by the energy and dedication of the Waldorf community. I strive to be involved in all the magical experiences that come our way. We are incredibly happy to be a part of this vibrant community!
The mission statement at WSD emphasizes creating aware individuals, and this commitment is evident in everything they do. I’ve connected with many other parents through Owen’s journey, encouraging them to explore WSD as an option. School doesn’t have to be a battle; The Waldorf School of DuPage is showing us that learning can be joyful and supportive. This is why we Waldorf!
